Derek O. Hanley served in the US Army and US Air Force as a paramedic, before working on the streets as a paramedic and then EMS educator. He transitioned into the creative industry starting his own business DOHP which provides photography, video production, and strategy in the public safety niche. In 2020 he embedded with paramedic crews in the SF Bay Area and documented the unfolding of the pandemic through the prism of the medics on the streets every day of the protracted crisis, culminating in his heirloom book Photos From the Front Lines. Images from this book were featured in the documentary film Honorable But Broken: EMS In Crisis narrated by Sarah Jessica Parker.
